In short, no. As we have grown as a college it is imperative that we provide our students with the equipment and support to minimise interruptions in learning that occur due to hardware/software issues.

After trialling different options over time and in collaboration with other schools, SCBC has found that this is best achievable when students are on the same device, as a form of uniformity and ease of configuration.

The ICT Levy is a compulsory fee that contributes to the costs associated with providing and maintaining technology resources.  Technology plays a central role in an SCBC education, and our College must ensure our Students have the opportunity to access the resources required to thrive in the modern digital society.

The ICT Levy contributes to:

  • Leased Microsoft Surface Go 3
  • Insurance Protection in the event of accidental damage
  • Extended warranty period (3 years)
  • Software Licensing
  • Device management and upgrades as required
  • Loan device in the event a student lease device requires repairs

At SCBC we manage approximately 2000 devices across our College; we want our students to have the best opportunity to succeed in their education. Leasing minimises interruptions to student learning, enables the College to provide support when required, and ensures students have access to the most up-to-date technology.

The college has arranged a special lease arrangement with Microsoft for a 3-year term.  This way your student has continuing access to the most current up-to-date technology.

At the end of the 3-year period, or when you finish your time with the College. The device is returned to Microsoft. Presently there are no ‘buy-out’ options.

Typically the 3-year lease period would run as years 7, 8 & 9, with a new device issued for years 10, 11 & 12. With the transition to Microsoft occurring in between these years, students who are in Years 8 or 9 in 2025 will still see out the three-year lease before receiving a renewed device in 2028.

The Collage has firewall and content filtering in place whilst students are connected at the College.  Through our partnership with Linewise, parents can connect to Qustodio which provides real-time monitoring and filtering, with further parental controls to manage device usage times and time limits. If you have not setup Qustodio please visit the SCBC Cyber Safety Hub to find out more.

Most subjects require students to use their device at some point for in class learning, research and/or assessment. Class usage will vary between the subject, teacher, content being taught and giving consideration to our students’ needs to absorb information in a variety of ways.

Damages should be reported to IT and a Student Claim Form must be submitted.

We strongly recommend our families review the insurance coverage on the policy provided when receiving the device, and ensure you consider if you require additional cover for loss or theft, under your current home and contents insurance policy.

The ICT Department, in conjunction with Secondary Teaching and Learning leaders, have put together a list of software programs that are required and available to each student and year group according to their study program.

Students can not install additional software onto their devices.

Some additional items are required, for example Wired Headphones, these items will be listed on the Year Level Booklist and may vary depending on Course selection.
